Many modern diet programs are in general relatively safe to embark upon.

The ABC Diet is a surprisingly effective, but potentially risky and highly controversial dieting system.

There is a pro-ana or anorexia movement going on in society, which has harmed the health of a growing number of people especially young women. If you decide to go on this diet, you need to realize that you could be putting your health at risk and could eventually develop anorexia nervosa.
What Exactly is Anorexia?
Anorexia is the absence of appetite for any reason, while the illness anorexia nervosa means an inability to eat due largely to psychological reasons such as fearing weight gain even when there is no visible sign of being overweight. Any long-term absence of appetite can lead to starvation and eventually death.
This is why most doctors recommend that you eat no less than 1,200 calories a day without medical supervision.
The ABC Diet is a 50 day plan. Some days you eat 0 to 500 calories and on other days you eat up to 800 calories. Generally, you eat between 200 and 600 calories daily. Some days you will fast or not eat anything at all, which is when this program could start becoming really dangerous, especially for those people with pre-existing health problems.
On this plan, you are encouraged to eat very specific types of foods, especially vegetables and fruits. Drinking plenty of water is also important, as with any weight loss regimen, but especially the ABC Diet.
Extreme Weight Loss
Anorexia of any kind, whether you choose to go on the ABC Diet voluntarily or you are suffering with an eating disorder, can and often does lead to extreme weight loss. The major disadvantage of this is that much of the weight that is lost will be water and muscle rather than fat.

Most people who have done the ABC Diet have lost anywhere from 30 to 50 pounds. Some people who were severely obese to begin with lost more than 50 pounds.
Danger: High Risk Factor
However, as nice as it sounds to lose 30 or more pounds in 50 days this is not a guarantee. Your body may hold on to any energy with all its might. When this happens, you will lose little if any weight.
The risks associated with the ABC Diet are probably not worth exposing yourself to unless you are in a desperate health situation that calls for rapid and extreme weight reduction. The associated side effects and high probability of developing anorexia all place you in an extremely dangerous place.
Whether you have a few pounds or a few hundred pounds to lose, there are plenty of other weight loss methods out there that are much safer and easier to sustain over the long term.
After all, the key to lasting weight loss is sustainable lifestyle changes.
